How to Find Inspiration

mindSometimes it can be a little puzzling to come up with a new blog post, a topic for an assignment or something awesome to wear to that big event coming up. Even I find coming up with ideas can be a complete road block sometimes. Here are some tried and tested ways that I’ve used in the past for coming up with in-genius ideas!

1 Books, Magazines and Newspapers Are Your Best Friend

– Open up a magazine to a random page and tell yourself ‘I need to find inspiration from the page I look at’ look at the page until you find a word or image that captures your attention and then think of how you could apply it to that blog post you need to write.

– Read, Read and Read. Staying up to date with not only the latest trends but politics, world events, local events, people, places and things will be a great source of inspiration. Read through your local newspaper or on the net (though I think newspapers are more fun!).

– Grab a novel, a pretty coffee table book or even a book you have no interest in and read some of it – not only will you learn something new, enjoy a great story, feast your eyes on pretty pictures, or if its a really awful book learn what not to do. Think about what you can take away from this book and apply it.

2 Mind Map Your Brain

– You need a piece of paper, pen (or pencil or quill what ever floats your boat) and a dictionary for this one. Open up the dictionary to a random page and the first word you look at write down in the centre of the piece of paper and draw a circle around it. draw a line of to the next word or thing you think of that reminds you of that word and keep going for a good couple of minutes until you have a plethora of words scrawled all over your page. You’re sure to find inspiration from at least something you wrote down (or a bit of a laugh if its a really inappropriate or odd word you had to start off with).

– Write in the centre of your page what you need to find inspiration for. then draw lines of from to other things you have thought of so far – see if you can expand them further or take it to crazy ideas that you think won’t work or you’ve done in the past – you may find that the perfect idea will evolve.

3 Mood boards, Mood Books and Pinterest

Collect pictures of pretty things you love, a style that’s inspired you or even pictures of funny cats. You can just stick to pictures but including colours, colour schemes, textures, trinkets, texts, quotes and anything else you can pin or put into a book will give you a great visual of things that you can take inspiration from. You can pin them on a board, to your Pinterest account or put them in a scrapbook or folder!

4 People Watch

Put yourself in their shoes, imagines what shoes they would have, try to guess their hobbies, wonder where they have traveled before, look at their outfit, guess what they ate for lunch, what do you think would be on their Ipod, what do you think inspires them? these are just a handful of questions and ideas you can use to spur off thoughts and ideas that you can apply  to your lack of inspiration!

5 Do the Exact Opposite of What I’ve Said

Or you can let the idea and inspiration come to you and just wait until something catches your eye or clicks in your mind, it will feel like it was fate!

2012 in review

Thankyou too everyone who visited oh my gosh this year I cant wait for next year ❤ xoxox

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner can carry about 250 passengers. This blog was viewed about 1,700 times in 2012. If it were a Dreamliner, it would take about 7 trips to carry that many people.

Hair Colour Trend Prediction

I know this may sound a little crazy but I have a theory that hair colours and styles I have done and do become quite popular in the future.

for example:

All the way back in 2010 I dyed parts of my hair pink 🙂 (haha I may have revisited it again this year) I’ve also noticed dip dying and colouring hair from the colours of the rainbow has become quite popular in 2012 :)!

at the start of 2011 I started to style my hair 1940’s style, especially Victory Rolls. while this isn’t as popular as coloured hair has been I’ve noticed a spike in popularity of vintage hairstyles this year too.

and finally, This year a week ago actually I dyed my hair a very vibrant copper colour (inspired by the lovely ladies Karen Gillan from Dr Who and Christina Hendricks from Mad Men) so I predict that Copper is going to be a hot colour in the near future ;D

does anyone think my prediction is crazy or i’m onto something here ;D? xoxox

Bananaberry Bread!

One of my favourite things to cook is banana bread. The other day I one upped it and made Bananaberry Bread! It tastes sooo good (that good I had to share it with you all!). It’s great as a snack, breakfast or even dessert! I’ve adapted the recipe from ‘The Australian Women’s Weekly – The Retro Cookbook’ which also is pretty awesome.

90 grams of unsalted butter softened

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1 cup of firmly packed light brown sugar (you can use caster or other sugars, I have in the past but it tastes best with brown sugar)

2 eggs

1 cup of plain all-purpose flour

1 cup of self-raising flour

1 mashed banana

½ cup of mashed strawberries

½ cup of chopped blueberries

1 preheat oven to 180C/350F. Grease a loaf pan and line base and the long sides with baking paper (this helps to get the banana bread out when it’s done, I’ve also just greased the loaf tin and coated it with plain flour before but whatever way you prefer is up to you)

2 beat butter extract, and sugar in a small bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time. Transfer mixture to a large bowl; stir in mashed banana, mashed strawberry and the chopped blueberries. Add sifted flours in two batched and mix.

3 spread mixture into pan and cover with a strip of pleated foil. Bake 40 minutes in the oven, uncover and then bake a further 30 minutes. Take the bread out at let it stand for 5 minutes before transferring it onto a wire rack to cool.

You can eat the Bananaberry bread as it or spread with lashing of butter, or maybe serve like a scone with jam and cream.

A Halloween Soiree

Halloween may have been and gone but that doesn’t mean there are not any parties going on this weekend! I hope everyone had a fabulous Halloween if you celebrate it, here in Australia it is not as popular. We did however have a couple of trick or treaters last night… and they were treated to bananas! We didn’t have any chocolate or lollies in the house surprisingly (may or may not be because chocolate and lollies don’t last long in our household XD) I also hope everyone affected from Hurricane Sandy were still able to celebrate Halloween, my heart goes out to all those affected by the hurricane ❤ I would love to hear how everyone celebrated Halloween or how they are going after the Hurricane in the US.

Meanwhile here are two very luxe outfits I quickly put together from gorgeous clothes on net-a-porter… I would prefer any goodies from net-a-porter any day over candy!

A Cause To Dress Up And Celebrate!

Yesterday was the 1st month anniversary Oh My Gosh Style being up on the world wide web! I can’t believe it has already been a whole month!! Thank you again to everyone who has stopped by, liked, commented or followed Oh My Gosh Style – love to everyone!

And does anyone remember that secret project I was talking about…

I mentioned it in my ‘Something New’ photo challenge photo. Drum roll please!

I’ve opened up an Etsy shop!!! I’m so excited 😀 I even had to celebrate by dressing up for the occasion of opening up the shop and getting my mum to take photos while I did XD (and posing with a glass of raspberry cordial and a lemon slice :P).

My Etsy’s shop name is ‘Her Ambition’. At the moment I am selling pretty, pretty headbands in all different styles. There is more to come I just need to photograph the other products!

Please check it out or tell me what you think (or make a purchase 😉 )!

Thank you so much everyone 🙂 ❤ xox

PS: Because you are all awesome and if you do decide to make a purchase here is a coupon for 10% off anything you buy! : GrandOpening10OMGS

It’s fun dressing up! (the dress is from Forever New, earrings Sparkles, and my current favourite pair of shoes are from Lipstik)

Has Fashion Gone To The Hunger Games?

Has anyone else noticed District 1 has been slowly overtaking our fashion and beauty routine?

I have, but shhh I don’t want the Capitol and District 1 to realise I’m on to them. Lets just keep it between us okay?

What you don’t believe me? Well then let me prove it too you then!

District 1 has some interesting fashion and beauty trends, and its filtering down to us in love with fashion and beauty. In fact… I wouldn’t be surprised if we all looked like Effie Trinket in the years to come.

Point 1 – Coloured Hair

Has anyone else noticed brightly coloured hair lately is quite popular? Gosh even I’m victim to Capitol One trend. And it’s also very easy to change our hair colour with all these new products on the scene – dye, powders, wigs, extensions…

Point 2 – Eyelashes and Eyeshadow

Again all garish and brightly coloured. and the false eyelashes who knew they could come in so many different shapes and styles. let alone with glitter, feathers or diamantes!

Look! You can even purchase Effie’s falsies at

Point 3 – Nail Polish and Nail Art

Has anyone noticed the nail art trend? Katniss had flames painted on her nails too for The Hunger Games… I’ve noticed this Capitol 1 trend quite a bit lately, even convincing everyday beauty lovers to adorn their nails advertising the Capitols beloved reality show…

Point 4 – Peplum

Effie Trinket always wears peplum. You know what? we do too.

Point 5 – Very Sparkly High Heels and Dresses

District 1 loves everything and anything luxe, hell they even name their kids after luxe items, Glimmer, Cashmere, Trinket ring a bell anyone? And I’ve Seen sparkly high heels and dresses everywhere from sequins to stones.

Point 6 – Neon

Now I’m sure this trend is to make it easier to Identify us. We all know how much they loved neon orange backpacks for tributes in the Hunger Games.

Point 7 Oxblood, skulls, and spikes.

All things related to the actual Hunger Games – blood, death and weapons.

Do you believe me now? see, I told you we were under the Capitols control…

Style Guide – Mix and Match Magic!

As a fashion blogger I love trends and the latest fashion as much as the next fashionista (neon for summer, cute skull accessories and peplum? yes please!). But I would never wear all the latest trends in one go, or all the top designer brands in one outfit even if I had a highly disposable income or won the lottery. Mixing and matching all different things is lots of fun and can really step up an outfit to the next level; plus that feeling of scoring a totally adorable necklace for a few dollars at an op shop is a massive win!

I’ve put together an example outfit for this post of mixing and matching. Would you believe that I’m wearing designer, chain store, op-shop and discount store all in one outfit? Looks kinda cool hey. Can you guess what piece is from where? I’ll tell you at the end of this post.

If you’re like me and can’t afford lots of high end items its best to invest in basic pieces that will last you for years. That way that $300 dollar peplum top will not date in a season or two. Key pieces to invest in are a good trench or winter coat, a little black dress, a classic watch, white shirt, jeans, and a classic heels or boots. Only purchase these items in your size, if the cut is a knockout on you and in basic colours such as black, beige, taupe, white, and blue for jeans. That way they will also test the stand of time and mix and match with all your seasonal pieces. The only time you should make an exception to this rule is if the item looks amazing on you, is in your absolute favourite colour and you know you will get lots of wear out of over the years. Most high end in season items filter down into chain stores and you can get a replica at a bargain price.

Next tip – Don’t be a slave to fashion. Don’t wear the latest trends because they are the hottest thing. Wear what you love, what’s right for YOU and reflect what you love. That way you will love what you are wearing and look fabulous in it.

Mixing old and new is epic. It’s like you are giving another life to an item, It gets to be in the spotlight not once but twice. Mixing old pieces with new I think should be statement pieces or a complete classic. Vintage has a certain charm and charisma about it, you wouldn’t let Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe sit at the back would you now? (I definitely wouldn’t even if Lady Gaga and Katy Perry were at the show).

The easiest way to introduce a little of the latest trend into your wardrobe without breaking the bank is by accessorizing. you can take a classic shirt and jeans and completely change the look with the accessories, a bit like a vanilla cupcake but with pink frosting, sprinkles and a cherry on top or coated with a rich chocolate icing (I’m really craving cupcakes at the moment and listening to pop music, sorry for all the lame examples XD). There are millions of combinations and additions you can have with a great foundation. Like in my example I am wearing a denim dress which I can style up many different ways. Today I actually started of wearing a blue headband, hoop earring, different handbag and strappy shoes, but really I ended up feeling tickled pink!

Did you guess correctly? – The dress is from forever new (chain store), shoes from BigW (discount store), handbag is Guess (designer/chain), headband – Alannah Hill (designer), bow necklace – Goodwill (op shop)

I must admit my designer items are my “must have and will get lots of use out of” purchases 😛 :).
